While his primary role is that of a wise counselor and mighty warrior, Jambuvan's family life becomes central in his encounter with Lord Krishna. The story of his daughter, the beautiful Jambavati, establishes his lineage. Living in his subterranean cave, he raised his beloved daughter, Jambavati, who was devoted to him. Following his legendary battle with Krishna, he offered his daughter's hand in marriage to the divine king, thus becoming the father-in-law of an incarnation of Vishnu. Many centuries after the Ramayana, Jambuvan had a direct and dramatic encounter with the next incarnation of Vishnu. The story of the epic fight between Krishna and Jambuvan was over the Syamantaka jewel. When Krishna was falsely accused of stealing the gem, he tracked it to Jambuvan's cave. Jambuvan, not recognizing Krishna, thought him an intruder and challenged him. The two fought a fierce and relentless duel inside the cave for 28 days. This ancient cave is traditionally believed to be the very spot where Jambuvan lived, where he stored the Syamantaka jewel, and where the epic 28-day battle with Krishna took place. He was the one who knew of the existence of the Sanjeevani herbs on the Dronagiri mountain and was able to give Hanuman precise directions, acting as the chief physician in the war effort.
