I personally inspect every property on this journey - hi there, I'm Catherine, founder of Discover Life Travel. Time and again, I'd arrive at a hotel with a glowing reputation only to find the scale had swallowed the service - too big, too corporate, the personal touch nowhere to be found. That's exactly why every property here earns its place on more than reputation: location, comfort, staff, and character, the best available regardless of price. 99% are five-star, though ratings only tell part of the story: what makes a stay memorable is harder to list on a booking site - it's energy. It's the feeling you get walking in, the warmth of the staff, the way a space is cared for. Swimming pools and spas come standard at this level. What sets a stay apart goes beyond what money alone can buy. Should availability shift for any reason, equally exceptional properties stand ready.

Two very different sides of Srinagar. The Taj Dal View brings polished comfort with sweeping lake and mountain views, while the New Jacqueline Heritage Houseboat on quiet Nigeen Lake offers something more intimate - carved walnut interiors, homemade Kashmiri meals, and mornings on a private sun deck. Together, they capture both the grandeur and the gentle soul of Kashmir.

Perched above Dal Lake, this is one of those hotels where the setting does half the work. Rooms look straight out over the water to the Zabarwan hills, and there's something wonderful about waking up to that view every morning. I love the pace here - a slow breakfast on the terrace, an afternoon shikara ride out to the floating gardens, then back for something warm from the Kashmiri menu as the light fades over the lake. The spa is a lovely finish to a day of sightseeing, and the staff bring a warmth that stays with you long after you've left Kashmir.

There's a particular kind of quiet here that Dal Lake simply doesn't have. Anchored on the calmer waters of Nigeen, this houseboat is all carved walnut panelling, Persian carpets and warm lamplight - the kind of old-world Kashmiri craftsmanship you don't find often anymore. Mornings start on the private sun deck with Kahwa in hand, watching the mountains catch the early light. Meals are homemade, mostly Kashmiri, and taste better for it. A shikara glides you gently through lotus-lined channels, past kingfishers rather than crowds. It's a slower, more intimate side of Srinagar.
