The Taj West End is Bangalore's most storied address, a colonial-era heritage hotel set across twenty acres of century-old gardens in the heart of the city. Verandas wrap the original 1887 bungalows, ceiling fans turn slowly above marble floors, and the grounds hold more heritage trees than most city parks. Peacocks wander the lawns at dusk. Inside, high tea is served with the same quiet formality it's carried for generations, and the staff move with the practiced warmth of a family business that still remembers its guests. The pool sits framed by frangipani and banyan tree. Few properties in India hold this much history so gracefully.

A friend insisted I view this property, and she was right. Royal Orchid Brindavan Gardens sits a little further out than I'd normally choose, and the location turns out to be exactly the point. Nearly 100 years old, the hotel overlooks Brindavan Gardens, with the fountains lit up right outside your window come evening. Inside, antiques fill every corner and staff treat you like family - Thomas, the manager, is a wonderful host who makes every stay feel personal. The pool, framed by palms, is beautiful. Few properties in Mysore offer this much character in one stay - simply stunning.

Dhole's Den is the best property available in Bandipur, and its location inside the forest itself is part of what makes it exceptional. Being set directly within the reserve puts you closest to the action for an early morning wildlife safari, when sightings are at their best. Inside a forest, safety comes first, and the property delivers - an electric fence runs the full perimeter, keeping elephants, tigers, and leopards at a distance and letting you relax once the sun goes down. Even within the compound, wildlife makes itself known - langurs, peacocks, and giant squirrels are a regular sight. Evenings here are their own reward: settle onto the porch with a cup of chai, the forest sounds all around you, knowing you're genuinely secure.

Established in 1829 as a schoolhouse, The Savoy is one of Ooty's earliest colonial buildings, later becoming a hotel and now one of the town's most storied stays. Cottage-style rooms sit among sprawling lawns and gardens, tiled gable roofs and Victorian architecture carrying genuine history rather than a recreated version of it. A 150-year-old Steinway piano plays nightly in the lounge, real fireplaces warm every room, and antique furnishings fill the signature suites. The Canterbury Bar, credited as the birthplace of the gin and tonic, adds its own piece of legend. 

Vivanta Coimbatore is the kind of place that puts you at ease the moment you arrive. Evenings call for the poolside BBQ restaurant - think sizzling grills and good conversation right beside the water, the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. Mornings bring a breakfast buffet worth waking up early for, Western favourites sitting alongside Indian classics in genuinely generous spreads. Higher up, the rooms open onto sweeping city views, a great vantage point over Coimbatore. Pull up a stool at the bar for an evening drink, and you'll notice it fast: the staff here are wonderful, warm and attentive without ever feeling formal. 

Villa Retreat sits high on the mountain, above the cloud line, and the setting does most of the talking. Heritage cottages carry genuine Victorian character - antique furniture, wooden flooring, pine ceilings - while the rooms open onto sweeping views across the valley. Mist often sweeps past at eye level, drifting through the gardens and softening the whole hillside. Sunsets here are the kind you stop everything for, the sky shifting colour over the hills. The food is home-cooked and generous, served with real care rather than formality. Wonderful staff make the stay feel personal.

Heritage Madurai -  across 17 acres of gardens, its old clubhouse blending Chettinad columns and South Indian temple influences with the original colonial bones. A 300-year-old banyan tree anchors the grounds. Rooms are spacious and earthy, terracotta flooring and natural textures throughout, and each comes with its own private plunge pool. A main swimming pool, shaped like a temple tank, adds another spot to unwind. The "Swig & Tee" bar carries a touch of old club culture forward. A genuine fusion of history and comfort, done with real care.

Blanket Hotel & Spa is perched at Attukad, front-row to the falls, mist rolling over the tea plantations right outside your window. Rooms are elegantly designed, with valley and waterfall views framing the scenery from your own window. An infinity pool sits above the hills, the kind of view that makes you linger over breakfast rather than rush through it. A full-service spa and Ayurvedic wellness area round out the stay, a genuine place to unwind after a day exploring the Western Ghats. Close enough to Munnar town for easy access, yet far enough to feel completely removed from it.

Brunton Boatyard sits directly on the water in Fort Kochi, built on the site of a century-old colonial shipyard once run by George Brunton himself. The setting is genuinely waterfront - sea-facing rooms, an outdoor pool positioned right at the harbour's edge, and views of fishing boats and passing ships from your own balcony. High tea is served on the manicured lawns, a proper colonial ritual done with real care. Inside, teak furniture, four-poster beds, and period artefacts carry the heritage through every room. A genuine window into old Fort Kochi.

A night spent on a premium houseboat, or Kettuvallam, is the moment every Kerala trip builds toward. Fully staffed and fully air-conditioned, these traditional vessels glide through the Alleppey backwaters at a pace that finally lets you slow down. Fresh seafood is prepared onboard through the day, caught locally and cooked simply, the kind of meal that tastes like the place itself. Evenings bring a private mooring away from the hundreds of other boats crowding the main routes, a quiet spot to watch the sunset over the water. It's an overnight experience unlike anywhere else in India.
