The Taj West End is Bangalore's most storied address, a colonial-era heritage hotel set across twenty acres of century-old gardens in the heart of the city. Verandas wrap the original 1887 bungalows, ceiling fans turn slowly above marble floors, and the grounds hold more heritage trees than most city parks. Peacocks wander the lawns at dusk. Inside, high tea is served with the same quiet formality it's carried for generations, and the staff move with the practiced warmth of a family business that still remembers its guests. The pool sits framed by frangipani and banyan tree. Few properties in India hold this much history so gracefully.

Evolve Back Kamalapura Palace is genuinely stunning, and it caught me off guard when I first walked in — nothing about Hampi prepares you for a palace this classic, this well done. Stone-paved boulevards and arched hallways run through the property, set against the same rugged boulders you'll see out on the ruins. The suites carry tiled floors, rich fabrics, chunky wooden furniture with brass trimmings, and private terraces looking straight onto the forest. An afternoon by the infinity pool doing absolutely nothing is the right call here. Dinner at the multicuisine restaurant that night held its own against anything else in India. 

Step into a comfortable base the moment we arrive at Denissons Hotel in Hubli. The front desk team are warm, quick and efficient with anything we need. In the evenings, we unwind by the outdoor pool, taking in the quiet after a day of sightseeing. For a change of pace, the hotel's own theater gives us a relaxed way to spend a spare evening. The onsite spa, with its sauna and massage treatments, rounds things out nicely between the day's outings. Denissons becomes our peaceful stopover on the wider Karnataka circuit.

Badami requires little of you, and Badami Court matches that mood exactly. This is a straightforward, well-kept hotel a short walk from the cave temples, the kind of place that lets the town do the talking. The garden and outdoor pool offer a genuinely pleasant spot to sit at the end of the day, quiet and well-tended without feeling formal. Rooms are clean and spacious without any pretence toward luxury. What stands out is the staff, warm without being showy, the sort of service that comes from genuinely liking the work. Breakfast is mostly South Indian, generous and unfussy. Every part of the stay feels honest, and that's exactly the point.

Taj Cidade de Goa sits right on Vainguinim Beach, and that setting shapes the whole stay. The buildings carry a genuine Portuguese feel - white walls, arched windows, gardens spilling out toward the sea. Rooms look out over the water or the grounds, and the pool area, framed by palms, is a good spot to sit with a book for an hour or two. A few restaurants cover different tastes, and breakfast comes with real variety without trying too hard. Staff are warm and easy to talk to throughout the stay. It's a comfortable place to slow right down, the beach close enough to feel part of the day rather than a separate outing.

The InterContinental sits on Marine Drive, the Queen's Necklace curve running along the Arabian Sea just outside. Deluxe rooms look out over the city, Mumbai's rooftops and streets spread below, modern furnishings and a proper workspace throughout. A rooftop pool sits above the hotel, sunset turning the skyline gold over the water - a short lift ride from the room. Staff notice details fast, small requests handled before you finish asking. Rooms carry deep soaking tubs, quality linens, everything in easy reach. South Mumbai's Art Deco streets sit steps away, museums and colonial architecture. One of Mumbai's standout addresses.

Our arrival at Jaypee Palace settles into a rhythm of its own. A sitar player holds a permanent post near the foyer, threading ragas through the arrival hall as guests check in and bags are carried through, marble floors catching the lantern light. Further into the grounds, traditional dancers perform each evening, Kathak movements unfolding across the lawns as strings of lights flicker overhead. I have watched guests pause mid-conversation, drawn toward the courtyard by the sound alone. The property sits on thirty-five acres, a scale that lets these performances breathe rather than compete with lobby chatter. Agra's chaos stays outside the gates.
