A 500-Year Physics Puzzle

Lepakshi,  located in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, is steeped in rich history that dates back to ancient times. The town derives its name from the Telugu phrase “Le Pakshi,” meaning “Arise, O Bird,” which relates to the mythological tale of Jatayu from the epic Ramayana. According to legend, Jatayu, a bird, fell wounded in this region while trying to rescue Sita from Ravana. When Rama discovered Jatayu lying there, he uttered the words “Le Pakshi,” reviving the bird's spirit. The region was historically significant, particularly during the rule of the Vijayanagara Dynasty, which flourished from the 14th to the 17th centuries.

This empire was known for its patronage of art and literature, leading to the construction of monumental temples and structures. It became a vital center, linked to notable figures like Virupanna Nayaka and his brother Viranna in the 16th century, who commissioned the Veerabhadra Temple around 1530 AD, fully embracing the Vijayanagara style of construction. The temple is adorned with exquisite frescoes and elegant sculptures, showcasing the artistic brilliance of that era.
